RA-Coordinator Andrzej Buras receives IAS-Fellowship
Andrzej Buras, coordinator of the Excellence Cluster's research area C was honored this month with the Carl von Linde Senior Fellowship of the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at the Technische Universität München.
The IAS was founded in 2006 as a interdisciplinary institution, located in Garching. Its aim is to promote excellent scientists and to provide the ground for innovative research projects under optimal conditions: Senior Fellows are exempted from their research obligations and administrative functions and therefore, for the duration of their fellowship, replaced at their departments by a stand-in. Additionally, a research fond of 50 000 Euros is granted over a period of three years.
The IAS panel, which elects up to five scholars as Senior Fellows each year, includes three Nobel Price winners: Klaus von Klitzing (Physics), Jean-Marie Lehn (Chemistry) and Richard R. Schrock (Chemistry).
Starting with the academic year 2008/09, Buras, as one of Germany's most outstanding theoretical elementary particle physicists, will be an IAS-Fellow for three years. There, Buras and his group will examine the limitations of the current standard model of particle physics in order to arrive at a more powerful theory. As the first results of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN become available in 2008, a number of open questions in physics will be answered, setting the future direction of research in fundamental physics.
